To whom it may concern,
Recently i came down with a severe case of bronchial blockage.Each time i coughed,or tried to cough,i thought i was going to pass out.I couldn’t get my breadth…it was very scary.

Even Psychologist should be taken with a grain of salt

This last weekend Dr. Amman was on WLRN2 for their fundraising program.

With all the respect to Dr. Amman’s title I still caution my readers to take his suggestions with a grain of salt. Do we truly need to buy his wife’s cookbook and his supplements in order to prevent dymensia and Alzheimer’s disease?

It is pretty appalling to listen to a small peacock who needs to show off as he has.

Does he suggest we all look like old Gorilla’s with a terrible posture due to overdeveloped upper back muscles?

Dr. Amman please keep in mind that we are wholesome, and the brain needs to be addressed as part of the whole person. The balance between the workout, modest nutrition, sufficient rest and – plenty of water would do much better than your one sided suggestions. It seems as if the whole presentation was for you a self promoting show off opportunity, not our true health.

I am sorry but there was more information to “what not to accept” of your suggestions than to accept.

Good habits – and less good, but we can create them anew

Good habits – and those which are less

Since we were toddlers we were trained for good habits like daily teeth brushing (even several times a day). Or, we learned the importance of  a daily shower for our health, and even having three meals a day can be so vital in our daily schedule.

Then we matured and most of us learned the importance of a habitual daily workout routine, and we still try our very best not to skip any of them. The reasoning behind all the good habit training – the maintenance of good health and well being, best brain functions and even our family life benefits of our good habits.

Something we probably never give another thought to is for example the Toothpaste and tooth brush. The inventor of those knew so well how once we get into the habit of using a certain product; we will have the need for it signaled to us by our own “trained” brain.

Our “trained” brain will soon feel the necessity for the tooth brush and toothpaste even though; 100 years ago no one brushed their teeth. It simply became an adapted habit in our daily “must do” routine list.

But what do we learn since childhood that will help us to keep in good health and fitness to incorporate into our daily “must do” list?

We learn the importance of exercise, yet, as we grow older we find less and less time for the so vital workout, even if it is just 15 minutes of running.

The worst is how it sits heavily on our conscience and makes us feel guilty for “simply not finding the time to work out every day…” but we wanted so bad to turn the simple workout, into our daily routine or habit if you like.

Even when Doctor OZ the Guru invites “Health and beauty specialists” onto his show to display their “hot” products we still better take it all with a grain of salt.

A different view of weight gain/loss

Most of us spend a significant amount of time at our computer or lap top.

Then, we suddenly feel very hungry and search for a little something to put into our mouth. It repeats itself throughout the day as we spend time in front of our desktop.

Well, let me reveal an important and for many of us, a life changing little secret.

The way our head is held, whether tilted a little or bend a little bit over, will determine our hunger. And why so? See, our head is placed on top of our spine column in such a way that we can turn our head in any direction we like. Our body is designed to move around a lot, unless we sleep. That is the only NATURAL time to stay still for a longer period of time.

However, sitting in front of our desktop doesn’t allow us much movement, especially of the head that is placed in one fixated position for a long time, without changing. That requires our neck muscles to hold the head in that same position and creates that very well known neck tension.  Yet, this is not the only result of the long fixated position of our spine and head. The other result is the – hunger. The hunger gets so bad, we have to jump up and stuff anything we can find into our mouth. Because – this position of our head and the neck muscle tension compresses the head and the upper neck vertebrae tightly together and create pressure on the Vagues nerve, by the heaviness on the Atlas and by the Occipital. The Vagues nerve is in charge of our basic vital needs, like hunger, bathroom, heart pace, etc, and so it receives that message of discomfort, which releases the first comforting instinct – hunger.  It could be also the opposite reaction of that nerve- nausea. In both cases- it is the display of distress of same nerve and the same area it irritates, and by simply chewing on something, we release that upper neck tension for a short while. Thus instead of jumping up for food, we should rather turn our head, role it around and even hang it backwards for a few seconds. Then, we better get up and do something else so our body can move and release that pressure off the neck muscles.

This will subside the sudden raven hunger and save us many unwanted calories. In case this can’t be done, have tiny carrots at reach, and by chewing them, the tension will subside together with the hunger urge.

So, the secret for weight loss in our time and age is not necessarily just in our diet and lack of exercise, but, in the neck tension due to long hours of computer work.

Guess how much protein is in a juicy, 8-ounce cheeseburger washed down with a milkshake? This single meal contains two to three times as much as most people need per day.

It’s no great surprise that Americans chow down on a lot of protein. We love beef and consume about 67 pounds per capita annually (that’s four times the international average). The popularity of low-carb regimes such as Atkins has also made meat the go-to food for dieters.

In fact, the average person eats about double the amount of protein that their body requires, according to the results of 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

How to fulfill your daily protein requirement

The human body uses protein to repair damaged cells and to build new ones. Marion Nestle, professor of nutrition at NYU and author of What to Eat, estimates that the average adult man needs about 65 grams of protein a day and the average adult female needs about 55 grams. Some sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization say you can maintain a healthy diet with even less.

What does this actually mean in terms of food choices? The National Institutes of Health explains that most people can meet their daily protein requirement by eating two to three small servings of a protein-rich food a day.

Examples of a single serving of protein include:

  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • 2-3 ounces of red meat, poultry, or fish (about the size of a deck of cards)
  • ½ cup of cooked dried beans such as black beans or chickpeas

Whole grains, seeds, and some vegetables also contain protein, so consuming enough is not difficult even if you don’t eat meat. Vegetarians and vegans can easily get what they need by balancing complimentary proteins such as corn and beans or rice and tofu. Nutritionists used to recommend combining foods at the same meal, but research now shows that is unnecessary.

Are there drawbacks to eating more protein?

Eating large amounts of red and processed meats is associated with higher rates of heart disease and cancer, and most nutritionists such as Marion Nestle recommend cutting back on meat, especially on fatty cuts.

However, it’s less well known that your protein choices can have a substantial impact on the environment. Meat and dairy production requires tremendous amounts of fuel, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers, and generates greenhouse gases. The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) recently published Meat Eater’s Guide points out that if you ate once less burger a week it would be the environmentally-positive equivalent of taking your car off the road for 320 miles.

Meat is also expensive. Not all proteins are created equal — neither at the doctor’s office, nor the cash register. Here’s a comparison of three typical proteins:

Many people find meat to be a delicious and satisfying component of their diet that they don’t want to sacrifice. But if you want to save money, eat a nutritionally sound diet, and are concerned about the impact meat and dairy production has on the planet, consider reducing your consumption.

Here are some tips from the EWG’s Meat Eater’s Guide:

  • Reduce portion sizes by eating one less burger or steak each week, or participate in Meatless Mondays by skipping meat (and cheese if you can swing it) just one day a week.
  • Choose the healthiest protein sources when you can. Beans, low-fat yogurt, and nuts are all high in protein and low-impact.
  • When you do eat meat and cheese, eat the highest quality that you can afford. (One way to save money is to eat less, but better quality meat and dairy products.) Here’s a guide decoding the labels, from cage-free to grass-fed.
  • Don’t waste meat. Uneaten meat accounts for about 20 percent of meat’s greenhouse gas emissions.

You don’t have to become a vegetarian or go to other extremes. These small changes will help reduce your impact, while providing plenty of protein in your diet.
